About this deal

It’s not the most extreme climb, and nor is it one of the easiest, but it will give you a challenge. Well, I should say right here that this book is not intended to replace Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides. The second series, broadcast in 2007, included Catbells, Crinkle Crags, Helm Crag, Helvellyn from Patterdale, High Street from Mardale and Pillar. In 1930, at the age of 23, Wainwright saved up for a week's walking holiday in the Lake District with his cousin Eric Beardsall. The books, published between 1955 and 1966, faithfully reproduced from the author's original manuscripts, are considered by many to be works of art in their own right, an exploration of all the major fellsin the Lake District complete with maps, diagrams of ascents and numerous sketches.

Walking the Wainwrights | Books Cumbria

It goes without saying that this is a long trek, requiring good footwear, provisions and refreshments, as well as warm layers. The descent goes like this: Hart Crag, Dove Crag, High Pike and Low Pike to High Sweden Bridge and eventually Ambleside. His reputation and the popularity of his work has of course led to numerous other books which are based on his achievements and story. And even though it’s scaled by thousands of keen walkers each year, it doesn’t mean it’s not challenging, especially towards the top. Wainwright was a lifelong Blackburn Rovers fan and a founder member of the Blackburn Rovers Supporters Club. When he published his first book it was privately, as he could not face the prospect of finding a publisher. This set is printed to high quality at a larger font size than the standard copies, designed for reading in the armchair. The Wainwrights are an easier prospect for completers than the Scottish munros, being less numerous, all within a relatively compact geographical boundary and generally of a lower height. Anyone setting out to start their quest to bag the Wainwrights, continue to tick off some more towards their target or simply enjoy a good walk on some of Cumbria’s finest peaks, regardless of their list status, will find Walking the Wainwrights a useful guide. Revised editions of Wainwright's other Pictorial Guides, A Coast to Coast Walk, The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, Pennine Way Companion, Walks in Limestone Country and Walks on the Howgill Fells were published by Frances Lincoln between 2010 and 2014, with the amendments again being made by Chris Jesty.

The Ramblers Association reported in 2008 that a boy of six years, four months and 27 days had become the youngest person to complete the Wainwrights.Although a number of more up-to-date guides are on the market, his books remain among the most popular for their depth, detail and unique style. An appeal was made to our members to donate any copies that they could give and this resulted in a tremendous start to this collection; in fact well over half of the titles we identified were supplied by members, with generous donations from the Wainwright family as well.

His friend Henry Marshall, Chief Librarian of Kendal and Westmorland, took charge of publicity and administration, and his name appears as publisher on the early impressions. Chris Jesty therefore walked and worked to produce revised editions without changing Wainwright's format. Part of the Southern Fells, Glaramara is a tranquil hill despite being in the midst of some of the Lake District’s busiest hotspots such as Ullswater and Borrowdale. By the mid-1980s Wainwright was a TV personality; he featured in three television series for the BBC, presented by farmer and broadcaster Eric Robson and devised, directed and produced by Richard Else. Among his 40-odd other books is the first guide to the Coast to Coast Walk, a 182-mile (293-kilometre) long-distance footpath devised by Wainwright which remains popular today.Because of the nature of the layout of the Lakeland fells, some peaks, such as Fairfield and Hart Crag, appear in more than one chapter. Today his name is synonymous with the Lake District, and is a resource any sensible visitor to the Lake District would consult before embarking on a walk or climb.
