About this deal

Use the thumbs up and thumbs down icons to agree or disagree that the title is similar to All Quiet on the Western Front. The former provides utter immersion on the expansive yet equally, somehow, claustrophobic battlefront, from artillery booms to thunderous gunshot, and savage close-quarters penetrations. Depending perhaps on your tolerance for Netflix's trademark overbearing Dolby Vision implementation, darkness levels and encoding issues (yes, the streaming service may still trounce several of its plethora of peers, but it's not immune to crush and compression artefacts), All Quiet on the Western Front was still quite the immersive experience on its streaming bow, and the leap up from 4K Netflix DV to 4K disc DV isn't seismic, but it is noticeable in all the right places.

It's a meticulously crafted examination of everything horrible that could possibly happen to a young and naive kid who has just walked onto a battlefield. Watching people slowly stab one another to death, then feel inherent remorse over what they've had to do, as shells blow craters in the land, oblivious to whether or not anybody might have been standing on it, mounted guns shred troops, and tanks roll around to finish the job. But, as with the video, the devil is in the detail, and the disc's more weighty track gifts the film an even more immersive ride.

But post-'Nam, for sure, war movies have seldom been blindly patriotic, and for the last half-century-plus, there have been some pretty gritty, punishing lessons in why war is bad. Steven Spielberg noted as much when he credited Milestone's work as partial inspiration for Saving Private Ryan . Dialogue - in the native German - is keenly prioritised where necessary, although frequently it just isn't necessary, with the focus on the track's strongest and arguably most important elements: effects and score. But - and your mileage will clearly vary as the near-unanimous praise has shown - there is absolutely nothing, barring that aforementioned score, new here. The droning sound didn't help either (clearly the director has watched Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk").

This scene is different from the book, and was inspired by an earlier scene showing a butterfly collection in Paul's home.

Professor Kantorek gives an impassioned speech to his German students about the glory of serving in the Army and "saving the Fatherland".

and uses a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG), High Dynamic Range and Dolby Vision, and is encoded using the HEVC (H. A young German soldier's terrifying experiences and distress on the western front during World War I. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 91 out of 100 based on 16 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports an approval rating of 97% based on 77 reviews, with an average rating of 9. By the end, Germany's delegation to Rethondes appears indignant as the terms and conditions of armistice are quoted by Mathias Erzberger, namely forfeiting submarines, planes, weapons and so on; what is read there was not in the November 11, 1918 capitulation act but was imposed upon Germany next year in the Treaty of Versailles. The site's critics' consensus reads: "Director Lewis Milestone's brilliant anti-war polemic, headlined by an unforgettable performance from Lew Ayres, lays bare the tragic foolishness at the heart of war. The UK 4K set for All Quiet on the Western Front comes in a larger-than-standard (more DVD-height) Mediabook-style package, complete with a nice little24-page booklet affording further background into the production. Going back to the front line, Paul is severely wounded and taken to a Catholic hospital, along with his good friend, Albert Kropp. Europe's busiest forums, with independent news and expert reviews, for TVs, Home Cinema, Hi-Fi, Movies, Gaming, Tech and more.
