About this deal

The Passenger is a gripping novel that plunges the reader into the gloom of Nazi Germany as the darkness was descending. It deserved to be read when it was written. It certainly deserves to be read now.

In fact, between the problem of drivers still talking or texting on cell phones (despite it now being against the law), impairment (both legal and illegal), wrong way driving accidents, and road rage...these cars have proven to be safer than those driven by humans... The author wrote this impressive book in one month in 1938, when he was just twenty-three. This novel was recently discovered and edited. The author lived a short life and he also had to move from one county to another with his mother before being interred on the Isle of Man as "enemy aliens." He as then deported to Australia in 1940 and was permitted to return to England in 1942 but the boat he was on was torpedoed by a German Submarine. He was 27 years old. Don't misunderstand I thought the premise, of an Orwellian society with driverless cars, was brilliant. Likewise, the motivation for revenge, yet, the act itself was misplaced and unjustifiable IMO. In comparison, consider Marrs' other book The One (which I loved) wherein the motivation and justification for Matthew's revenge was without question. It just made sense and the punishment for Ellie's complicity matched the crime.

Picture this, it's a day and age where AI control cars and you don't need drivers or to drive yourself. in the UK, British citizens are finding “The One” (from his previous book) using “MATCH YOUR DNA” technology and driverless vehicles will replace those driven by humans within the next 5 years. In the end it is the loss of his briefcase with all his money that is the last straw that unravels Otto. His options now appear to be nil! But at least he has seen Germany from end to end.

i highly recommend this to anyone who likes sci-fi stories that really dive into the real life ramifications. I could not put this book down. I started feeling like I was a juror. I definitely could not be one of those jurors. I felt so sorry for them. I really loved the ending and the twists.

I’m really doubtful that Mr. Marrs is from this planet because he outsmarted most of the genius writers with this book. He is so talented, knows how to deceive the readers with his conspiratorial moves and amazing twists. Twists and turns, and both guessable and non-guessable plot lines. The plagues of reality TV and social media!! The sheer amount of our lives available to data mine and the world being run by artificial intelligence! Eight driverless cars. Eight passengers, all of whom have a secret and a specific plan for that morning. None arrive at their intended destination.I remember turning off the audiobook, needing to blast music and not read or listen to any book whatsoever. I hit a wall — all of a sudden— I was exhausted from listening to this story. I wanted to run-away on those trains — escape my own discomfortable restless life — in the same way our protagonist — Otto Silberman - was trying to escape from Nazi persecution. John Marrs is a former journalist from Northamptonshire, England, who spent 25 years interviewing celebrities from the world of television, film and music for national newspapers and magazines. HOW can you possibly decide when you are only given SOME of the information about each passenger...WILL your personal beliefs and prejudices affect your vote or can you remain objective?
