The Initiates: A Comic Artist and a Wine Artisan Exchange

Theon of Smyrna, an initiate of the Eleusinian Mysteries who flourished in the first century A.D., divides the Mysteries into five parts in his book Mathematica:Zhou Y, Siu AF. Motivational intensity modulates the effects of positive emotions on set shifting after controlling physiological arousal. Scand J Psychol. 2015;56(6):613-21. doi:10.1111/sjop.12247 The Initiate: Some Impressions of A Great Soul is a combined anthology and parable dealing with the occult, written by the British composer Cyril Scott in the early 1900s. It was first published (anonymously) in 1920.

At the age of eighteen he had already mastered all the teachings of the schools to be found on Samos and conferred with the great philosophers Thales and Anaximander at Miletus. These masters opened out new horizons for his enquiring mind, though none fully satisfied him, for he failed to find the unity of all things in their contradictory teachings. The 'purifications' Theon mentions have less to do with bodily cleanliness (though this is important too), but rather with the gradual sweeping away of wrong thinking and wrong ideas, leading to a clearer apperception of Truth in the mind of the candidate. Those who were unwilling or unable to divest themselves of their erroneous ideas were expelled from the Mysteries. This may seem harsh, but if you think about it you will see that it is actually a kindness. For there can be nothing more cruel and pointless than to instruct the unready and unreceptive. The 'reception of the sacred rite' means that after purification, which may last several years, the candidate receives instruction in the higher mysteries. Theon continues:The expression, master-builder, used only once in the whole Bible, and by Paul, may be considered as the closest any initiate has come to openly revealing his status. When Paul entitles himself a "master-builder," he is using a word pre-eminently Masonic, Kabbalistic and occult which no other apostle uses. He thus declares himself an Adept, having the right (laid the foundation) to initiate others. The book is divided into two parts: an anthology entitled “ Justin Moreward Haig” and describing a mysterious person identified only by that pseudonym through a series of anecdotal stories, and a parable illustrating certain principles of occult philosophy entitled “The Circuitous Journey.” Pythagoras had heard of the great wisdom of Egypt and how the occult sciences were still preserved in the temples of the Nile by those who presided over the Sublime Mysteries of the Gods. He obtained a letter of recommendation to Ahmes, the ruler of Egypt during the 26th Dynasty. So we may say that he was born at just the right time to benefit from what remained of the great Wisdom of Egypt—wisdom already hoary with age in the 5th century B.C.

Borrowed from Latin initiātus, perfect passive participle of initiō ( “ begin, originate ” ), from initium ( “ a beginning ” ), from ineō ( “ go in, enter upon, begin ” ), from in + eō ( “ go ” ). initiate”, in Webster’s Revised Unabridged Dictionary, Springfield, Mass.: G. & C. Merriam, 1913, →OCLC. On his arrival, Iamblichus tells us that Pythagoras' eloquent discourse turned all the young people away from a life of debauchery and idleness. He even persuaded the young women to part with their golden robes and ornaments to celebrate the defeat of vanity and luxury. This must have been just as difficult a feat then as it would be now! Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher of the 5th century B.C., posits a very similar question in the Fragments attributed to him: Now, you may ask what sort of questions were put to the candidate for initiation into the Mystic Rites of the Druids? It so happens that we know what many of these were, for they are preserved in some old Welsh manuscripts and histories of the early centuries of the Christian era. One example of this are the questions which the 6th century British Bard Taliesin mentions in his poem Mabgyvreu or 'Elements of Instruction', which you can find in the Mythology and Rites of the British Druids by Edward Davies.Mystkowska-Wiertelak A, Pawlak M. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master-builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon." This video has been medically reviewed by John C. Umhau, MD, MPH, CPE. What Are the 3 Components of Motivation? All-or-nothing thinking: If you think that you must be absolutely perfect when trying to reach your goal or there is no point in trying, one small slip-up or relapse can zap your motivation to keep pushing forward. Etienne Davodeau is a comic artist - he doesn't know much about the world of wine-making. Richard Leroy is a wine-maker - he's rarely even read comics. Yet these two, in the spirit of good will and curiosity, asked: why do people choose to spend their time like writing and creating comics or producing wine? To answer this question Etienne went to work in Richard's vineyards and cellar and Richard, in return, leapt into the world of comics. In this beautiful adventure, the pair realise that they both have the precious and necessary power to bring people together. At the age of sixty, Iamblichus tells us Pythagoras married Theano, thus disproving the accepted dogma that initiates must remain celibate. We know almost nothing of their life together and not wishing to speculate, must pass over this time in the philosopher's life and conclude this afterword. But before we do so, we cannot resist quoting one anecdote attributed to Pythagoras' wife which should appeal to all our regular readers. One day Theano was asked what length of time should elapse before a woman was pure again after intercourse with a man. The Sage's wife replied: "If it is with her husband, she is pure all the time; if with another man, she is never pure." Religious bigots please take note! Persistence is the continued effort toward a goal even though obstacles may exist. An example of persistence would be showing up for your psychology class even though you are tired from staying up late the night before. How familiar this sounds, and how typical it is of the lives of all the great initiates, every one of whom had to wade through an ocean of unwisdom before they arrived at the sea of Truth which would illuminate and direct their future work on behalf of mankind.
