Mud’, says Bertie, ‘It was everywhere. In my eyes, my nose, my mouth, my ears. Men were going mad…. calling for their mothers……’ The thing I most enjoyed about this book is the wonderful, strong women characters the author has created. It was very interesting to follow them throughout the story and see the challenges they face. I liked their determination that their children wouldn’t experience the same problems. I might not have always agreed with their decisions, which sometimes had me wishing I could shout at them, but I always wanted to support them. Political authority versus chaos king lear is primarily concerned with family dynamics. When he gives away his authority to the unworthy and evil Goneril and Regan, he not only destroys himself and his family, but he also destroys all of Britain. Cordelia: The Final Blow I love the author’s books so eagerly awaited this book & thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for the copy. This is another well written & very well researched book that although is still set, mostly, in Cornwall it's very different from the author's other novels. I loved it. Very good characters with plenty of depth, the book was well paced & never lagged. I was drawn in at the start & found myself totally engrossed & actually read it in two sittings as I just couldn’t put it down. An engrossing family saga spanning a century & of course that secret.

This one is not one of her Cornish series but it is based in Cornwall. It is a family saga set during war time (wars I and II) and post war in the late 50s. It is about one daughter finding a trunk and uncovering the lives of the generations of women before her. Caroline's own mother Hannah and Hannah's mother Clara Bolitho. As a result of his treason, Cornwall gouged out both of Gloucester’s eyes, which Regan encouraged him to do. A member of Cornwall’s staff tried to prevent Gloucester from being harmed by the king. Who Kills Cornwall In King Lear? Clara is making the journey from London to Cornwall after the Great War to meet the family that she could have been apart of. She is taking with her a secret, one that only one other person knows about. Caroline discovers her families history through a trunk which looks like it has come all the way from Penang. She embarks on a discovery. Caroline wants to show her daughter how a life can be lived and that all it takes is determination and an inner strength that all the women in the family clearly have.

I love historical fiction and I was so happy to get the chance to read this book, the blurb and cover completely drew me in and I have to say that they did not disappoint. This book is set primarily in Cornwall, but some chapters take part in France, Kent, London, Penang (Malay) and army training camps, and I have to say that the setting (Cornwall) was a very important part of the story, especially surrounding the heritage and family tree of the characters. Set between two world wars and beyond the Daughters of Cornwall is a family saga spanning decades and follows the lives and fortunes of the Bolitho family, with Clara at the helm. The novel, written by the woman who was King lear’s mother, is named Learwife, and it takes place entirely within the mind of the woman who was mother to Regan, Goneril, and Cordelia: Berte, Queen lear‘s wife. The Tragic Downfall Of King Lea

On the plus side this book was a very easy read. There were also some curveballs thrown in, one in particular providing a very dramatic twist to the tale which put everything in a different light and required a complete reevaluation of all that had gone before. Also the characters are well developed. This story starts like a whisper as all the characters are introduced and you are immediately caught up in love affairs, war, secrets and lies. The book is rich in description at the breathtaking views of Cornwall of the horror of war, of death and birth and shows how strong women can be no matter what the path in life they have chosen to be on. as the secrets come tumbling out or are kept hidden until the end, the story draws you right in. A story that will stay with you long after you have finished reading. The sister writes that she sees me as a metal of her own, and that she’s worth her weight in that material. When I marry that lord whose hand must carry my burden, I will feel my love for him again and again. As a result, I’d like to wish Her father’s heart peace, as I demonstrate here how much of her heart I have. My two daughters’ dow’rs digest the third, and I let pride, which she calls plainness, marry her. Cornwall and Albany, I am pleased to invest you in collaboration with my powerful force, pre-eminence, and all of the large effects that come with it. Agricultural animals, as well as their attendants, are represented. This will not occur in the future because Jupiter does not intend to do so. I've not read Fern Brittton before but was aware of her as a television personality. I was curious and did not have very high expectations as usually its the celebrity's name that sells the book not the capability of the writing. I have since seen an interview with her in which she said this was the story of her family. That makes it much more intriguing.I loved Hannah. She is so brave and resourceful. I wonder if I would have been like her. I hope so. I think this is the author’s first foray into historical fiction and although I enjoyed this gentle, unassuming read immensely, I didn’t like it quite so much as her previous novels. A new Fern Britton novel will always have me rushing out to buy at the earliest opportunity and on the strength of her previous successes I do think Daughters of Cornwall will sell just as well.
