When it comes to sleeping bags, one brand that everyone should know about is Carinthia. Carinthia make very well regarded sleeping bags. Made in Europe to very high standards, Carinthia sleeping bags feature G-loft, which gives them a superb warmth to weight ratio whilst remaining highly breathable. On top of that, they are excellent value for money. Today we are comparing the specs of two of their best known synthetic-filled sleeping bags by doing a Carinthia Defence 4 vs 6 spec comparison. I don't own a current Carinthia sleeping bag, my old one was so old that it doesn't really matter anymore and currently I use the British made Snugpak Special Forces sleep system. The Defence 4 features a double zipper, so it can be unzipped from the bottom for ventilation when required. The top zip can be opened from the inside as well as outside (the bottom zip is outside only). Stitched to the side of the zip is a ribbon guide, which prevents it from snagging. The Defence 4 is the most non-snagging bag I've ever used - a superb (non-YKK) zip design. The Defence 6 is made with a 3-layer construction with loose outer shell to trap even more warm air. The Carinthia 4 utilises a 2-layer construction.I have just spent a week in North Wales with this bag (April 2018), used along with a decent mat it will keep you warm all night. I woke up one morning and my damp clothes hanging to dry from the day before where frozen stiff, but I was toasty warm. DIFFERENTIAL CUT; Even when the sleeper moves about compressing the inner layer of insulation, the sleeping bag’s warmth is retained. Successive insulating layers are cut more generously. This ensures the greatest loft in all areas and in every position. Additional air cushions form between the various layers. Movement inside the sleeping bag creates pressure points, but with our differential cut only the innermost layer is compressed. The outer layers retain their loft and therefore their insulating properties.

The outer shell is a super-light, highly resistant, microfibre nylon with a fine microporous coating which makes it waterproof. There is a generous draft tube on the inside of the zipper to prevent heat loss at the zipper. You can close the currently produced Carinthia bivvy bags from inside and breath through the special GoreTex bivvy bag fabric! Would you try that with an older Carinthia bivvy bag or any other bivvy bag you surely will die of suffocation!
In the end the question is, if you are protected enough against snow, for example under a tarp or in a tent, if you need to put the SF1 between SF2 and bivvy bag. If yes, the Snugpak SF system is surely the better choice. The mummy shape: Here, the criteria of stuff size, weight, and warmth are most important. The tapered foot section reduces weight and stuff size. However, the main advantage is that there is increasingly less internal volume to keep warm from the knee downwards. The foot section should not be so small that the feet cause insulation layers to poke out. A trapezoidal foot section has proven to be ideal. A wedge shape, declining evenly in width from top to bottom, does not fit the body's true proportions. G-Loft filling - Carinthias own, in-house "hollow-fibre", made in Austria. Highly compressible, excellent weight-insulation ratio, and also moisture resistant, meaning that it will work even under long term use in damp conditions. We don't recommend using this bag without some form of over-head shelter, as although it's practically waterproof, prolonged precipitation will overwhelm it.
