About this deal

Most traditional bottle warmers will heat up one bottle of milk (or jar of food). You place the bottle in the central vessel of the warmer, fill around it with water from a jug and switch it on. An element heats the water, which in turn heats the bottle. Disposable baby bottles These aren't so much disposable bottles as disposable sterilised bags that fit into a bottle. They can be convenient for use when you're on the go. These bottles, made by baby feeding brand MAM , don't require any additional equipment for sterilising provided that you have a microwave. You pour water into a chamber in the base of the bottle, arrange the bottle components on top and microwave for three minutes. This will depend on how frequently you’re planning to use bottles to feed your baby. Newborn babies generally feed between 10 and 14 times in 24 hours, with feeds becoming a little less frequent as they grow. If you are exclusively bottle feeding your baby, whether formula or expressed breastmilk, you might want around four to six bottles and teats to get you started. This allows for sterilising them between feeds. However, this sort of cup may not be completely leak-proof if it gets jiggled around a lot in your bag or in the car.

If you are, or you're planning to express breast milk, see our guide to buying the best breast pump . Most bottles will hold 250ml (9fl oz) of milk, although you can get smaller bottles for new babies that are 150ml (5fl oz). John Lewis offers bottle feeding accessories as well as weaning products in its baby and child range. You can even book an appointment with one of its nursery advisors (in store or virtually) if you need help with what to choose. Herman (2021) How you offer a bottle can be more important than what’s inside, Available at https://www.todaysparent.com/baby/breastfeeding/paced-bottle-feeding/ [Accessed 6 December 2021]Teats are either latex or silicone. Although there's no great difference between them, silicone teats have a reputation for being more durable, while latex teats are said to feel more like a nipple. Loved by mums and babies, our award-winning**, easy latch-on, breast-like teat feels closer to skin and mimics the natural flex and movement of a mum’s breast for a comfortable feed. 95% of mums reported that their baby accepted the soft silicone teat with skin-like feel and would recommend to others. * Doidy cups are a good starting point for some babies. These plastic cups have handles and a slanted side which helps the baby to see the contents of the cup and guide the drink to their mouth.

Think about what material you want to go for, whether it's BPA-free plastic or glass. Since June 2011, it's been illegal to sell baby bottles containing BPA (bisphenol A) in the EU. This came after the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) warned that BPA can leach into the milk and if absorbed by the body, can interfere with healthy growth.Whether or not you need a bottle warmer depends on whether your baby wants heated milk, and how happy you are with just using a jug of hot water to raise the milk temperature. Types of bottle warmers Standard bottle warmers Sterilisation usually takes around 15 minutes, but bottles also need to be rinsed in recently boiled water before use to completely get rid of the chemical solution. Hurley, K. M., Cross, M. B., & Hughes, S. O. (2011). A systematic review of responsive feeding and child obesity in high-income countries. The Journal of nutrition, 141(3), 495–501. https://doi.org/10.3945/jn.110.130047 [Accessed 6 December 2021] If you're making up formula to feed your baby, you shouldn't need a bottle warmer, as the government advice is to make fresh formula for every feed. NHS (2019a) How to make up baby formula, Available at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/making-up-baby-formula/ [Accessed 3 December 2021]

Powdered formula is not sterile, so you need to use water at approximately 70 degrees to kill any bacteria that might be present (NHS, 2019a). If the water is too hot it can reduce the nutritional benefit of the powder, but if it is too cold it may not kill the bacteria in the powder. ‘Ready-to-feed’ bottles contain ready-made milk that has already been sterilised (NHS, 2018; Unicef, 2019). Pearson-Glaze (2019) Best bottle for a breastfed baby, Available at https://breastfeeding.support/best-bottle-breastfed-baby/ [Accessed 4 December 2021] Ready-to-feed bottles can be a convenient short-term solution if parents have been advised to give their baby formula on medical advice. They’re more expensive and not great for the environment though (NHS, 2018; Unicef, 2019). If they can't control the rate of feeding, they are more likely to over-feed. Non-responsive feeding has been associated with discomfort and fussiness in the short term (NHS 2021) and linked to obesity in the longer term (Hurley, 2011; Watchmaker 2020).

What size bottle will my baby need?

NHS (2021) Bottle feeding Advice. Available at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/advice/ [Accessed 6 December 2021] Cons: Generally these only take four bottles (other types take six or eight), some sterilisers can’t be used in the most powerful modern microwaves, some may not fit in smaller microwaves. Cold-water sterilisers NHS (2019b) Sterilising Baby Bottles, Available at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/bottle-feeding/sterilising-baby-bottles/ [Accessed 3 December 2021]

You place the washed bottles in the steriliser with a small amount of water, fasten the lid, place it in the microwave and operate according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Sterilisation takes about 10 minutes.

What type of feeding bottle is best?

Teats are made from silicone or latex. Silicone is less flexible but more durable than latex, which needs to be replaced regularly (Which? 2019). The pace at which milk goes into your baby’s mouth, known as the 'flow rate', depends on the number and type of holes in the tip of the teat. If you’re planning to breastfeed it isn't necessary to buy bottles ‘just in case’. Over 90% of maternity units in the UK are now Baby Friendly Accredited, which means a midwife on the infant feeding team should be able to support you if you do have any difficulties with breastfeeding straight after birth (UNICEF 2017). They’ll help you with hand-expressing your colostrum and feeding it to your baby using a spoon, syringe or feeding cup (Unicef 2017). Find out whether your maternity unit is accredited here. Scheel, C. E., Schanler, R. J., & Lau, C. (2005). Does the choice of bottle nipple affect the oral feeding performance of very-low-birthweight (VLBW) infants?. Acta paediatrica (Oslo, Norway : 1992), 94(9), 1266–1272. Available at https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1651-2227.2005.tb02087.x With this type, you place your washed bottles upside down in the steriliser, add water and switch it on. The water is then heated electrically. When sterilisation is complete, usually after about 10 minutes, the steriliser switches off automatically. Provided the lid isn't opened, the contents will stay sterile for a while (usually about six hours).
