About this deal

The romance is slow burn. Tho Cassie was instantly attracted to him and was already thinking of him constantly after their first meet. I had gotten concerned if it was insta lust, thankfully it wasn't. The two share a lot of sweet moments- that towel scene, when she teaches him about the human world, when he comforts her and when he confesses his feelings for her. I didn't like the "Who did this to you" moment, felt like it was thrown in there for the readers and for the sake of it. The spice was okay, I needed more of that.

The last 20% ruined the story for me. The whole plot line at the end of the book is just ridiculous. Cassie Greenberg needs a new place to live, and fast. When she finds an affordable apartment in a beautiful neighbourhood, she knows there must be a catch. The one sex scene was pretty lukewarm on my spice scale and didn’t do much for me. It also took so long for them to bang it out. There was minor bite play but mama wanted more.

I'm currently homeless and urgently in need of an apartment, so / omw, bully my landlady into evicting me/ if you would be so kind to consider my misfortunes. I would not be of any inconvenience to you and I definitely won't snoop around in your absence, I promise. Your bedroom and broom closet would be safe with me. What threw me off a little was the last third of the book.. the main conflict i guess you can call it. This is an absolutely laugh-out-loud, entertaining, and eccentric paranormal romance between a quirky, selfless, artsy heroine and a cinnamon bun immortal with dreamy Mr. Darcy vibes. He is also leaves Cassie heart-melting notes around the apartment, always asks about her day, and doesn't look half bad shirtless on the rare occasions they're both home and awake.

It also did not feel like a vampire romance?? The vampire stuff felt like an afterthought to try to make the plot seem unique. Vampires don’t automatically add razzle dazzle! You need to also provide the razzle and the dazzle! There wasn’t any lore and you’re kinda just like boom vampires exist which works sometimes…but it didn’t here. I could’ve maybe ignored it for super interesting character development and plot…but there wasn’t any.

We can't do this here," I mumbled against his lips. Mostly because it felt like something I was supposed to say, given that this was Sam's bathroom and an entire apartment full of people was having a party on the other side of the door. He gave me another smile, more bashful this time. "Fine, fine. You've got me." He pointed at the television. "I've been watching subtitled Korean dramas on Netflix."

Berkley Publishing Group and Jenna Levine provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Publication date is currently set for August 29, 2023. So, if you're into swoon-worthy romance, zero unnecessary drama, a relatable FMC in her 30s (YAY!), chef's kiss diary entries, hilarious internet search histories, and an anachronistic slash confirmed bi vampire hottie (who looked a suspicious lot like tom ellis in my mind) with a hidden swiftie side and kermit the frog pj pants, this book's your guy.

It put me in such a euphoric and light mood I can't stop giggling, which I probably stop doing considering it's midnight and my cat is looking at me like I've gone insane, but really, I can't. This humorous debut from Levine is perfect for readers who enjoy the roommates-to-romance trope and a dash of sexy vampire.”— Library Journal (starred review) Eighteen-year-old Mallory Greenleaf is no longer interested in chess, not since her hypercompetitive dad left—the game calls up painful memories. But she grudgingly agrees to play in a charity tournament as a favor to best friend Easton Peña. After she unexpectedly beats current world champion Nolan Sawyer, she’s offered a fellowship that will prepare her to play professionally. Even though Mallory doesn’t want to play anymore, she needs the money that winning would provide; she’s delayed college to support her family, since her mother is chronically ill with rheumatoid arthritis and is unable to work regularly. The more time she spends with Nolan, the more Mallory comes to like and respect him—and the more time she spends playing chess, the more she remembers how much she loved it. But when she learns that Nolan has been keeping a big secret from her, she isn’t sure if she’ll be able to move past it to build a relationship with him. Filled with the author’s signature humor, well-developed characters, and realistic conflicts, plus the fully realized setting of competitive chess, this captivating romance will delight teen readers as well as Hazelwood’s adult fans. Mallory and Nolan are both cued white; there is some racial diversity among the supporting cast. Mallory and Easton are queer. My Roommate Is a Vampire by Jenna Levine is a debut paranormal romantic comedy. Cassie Greenberg has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Applied Arts and Design and loves being an artist. Unfortunately, she can’t earn a living that way so she works part-time at a coffee shop and part-time in the children’s section of her local library in Chicago, Illinois.
