Rule #1, ya get what ya pay for! With that being said these are a pretty good value for the price and are great as emergency lanterns which is what I bought them for. Anyway, I cannot tell you why, it doesn't make sense to me(I'd actually love it if someone could explain it), but I can tell you that it works, at least for me, with the rechargeable AAA batteries I've used, and they're not Eneloops.

It’s just one setting. No strobe/SOS/red light setting. That’s fine. I like that it’s simple. I have other lamps that have those options if needed. It's white light and I really don't get the whole "it's too bright thing" You can temper the brightness by just not extending the collar all the way out. This in no way compares in output to a dual mantle coleman at full burn... so there.
