About this deal

Polar bears spend over 50% of their time hunting for food. A polar bear might catch only one or two out of 10 seals it hunts, depending on the time of year and other variables. Their diet mainly consists of ringed and bearded seals because they need large amounts of fat to survive. Can you believe that this little book about a very big polar bear can introduce young readers to addition and fractions? This polar bear can’t understand why he is so much bigger than the other animals around him and he learns how many sardines or walruses it would take to reach his height. Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? By Bill Martin, Jr. & Eric Carle But the best part is that this book takes the reader through the whole "process," from normal happy life to the discovery of a diagnosis, the "growling days, and laughing days, and days that mixed them up," death, and learning to move forward. It doesn't skip any of it, and doesn't shy away from what's really happening. The characters (both of them, including the one who is dying) have time to process their emotions, feel full of hope and sorrow, and say goodbye. For someone who wants a book that reflects their experience, this is beautiful, heartbreaking, uplifting, and perfect. Inside: a list of polar bear books for kids with descriptions of each title so that you can choose the best book for your preschool, kindergarten, or early elementary students.

The theme of The Polar Bear is not only educational with an abundance of facts, but it stresses the theme of empathy for animals. For example, throughout the book it relates the polar bear’s life to a human’s life, and it shows kids how much in common we have with animals. Females den by digging into deep snow drifts, which provide protection and insulation from the Arctic elements. They give birth in winter, usually to twins. Young cubs live with their mothers for some 28 months to learn the survival skills of the far north. Females aggressively protect their young, but receive no help from their solitary male mates. In fact, male polar bears may even kill young of their species. One day, the polar bear Leaf arrives at the coast of the temperate climate wilderness. The first reaction of the animals is fear and confusion, but eventually, they overcome their own fears, and they help Leaf. I really appreciate this, especially now with the refugee crisis. I think to be afraid of the unknown is a normal thing for humans, but often I see not the most helpful attitude towards this fear. We should not shun each other for that; we should approach each other with an open mind and willingness to talk and listen. If there is anyone who deserves to be condemned, it's the politicians who feed and then build their careers on this fear instead of doing something meaningful. Polar bears roam the Arctic ice sheets and swim in that region's coastal waters. They are very strong swimmers, and their large front paws, which they use to paddle, are slightly webbed. Some polar bears have been seen swimming hundreds of miles from land—though they probably cover most of that distance by floating on sheets of ice. Arctic Adaptations Leaf is a pleasure to read aloud. There not too many words to detract from the images and emphasis and call outs are added to make this a simple but very powerful book. In the Arctic, most industrial development has been on relatively small pieces of land. As summer sea ice retreats, a new ocean is emerging, which allows more opportunities for industrial development at sea and on larger parcels of land, which WWF is currently fighting against. Throughout the Arctic, we convene workshops for people to share their experiences and successes in keeping the peace between people and bears. Jean Craighead George is best known for her chapter books for older readers like Julie and the Wolves and My Side of the Mountain. Did you know she also has picture books for younger readers? In this one, she tells the story of Tigluk who is determined to save the very last polar bear. It’s a powerful and important story. The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett

The story is at just the right level. It is simple enough to be followed by young children but enough themes involved to made younglings continue to think as they get older especially with prompting. The Bear Report– Sophie does not want to do her homework, a research report on polar bears. Bor-ing. They’re big. They eat things. They’re mean. What else is there to say about them anyway? Polar bears need to eat a lot, but don't have to eat every day. Their main food sources are seals, walrus', narwhals, and beluga whales and a polar bear will walk long distances in search of food. They usually eat about 40 seals a year. Interestingly, polar bears get their water from the seals fat, because sea water is too salty to drink. Unlike other bears, polar bears don't hibernate, but can sleep for long periods of time, especially in summer when ice melts and food is hard to find. Unexpected plot development, character development, a moral that all humans would do well to learn from. And all of this not just beautifully illustrated but told with such delicacy. Her first book as author and illustrator LEAF was published by Flying Eye Books in June 2017. In 2018 it was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal, long listed for the Klaus Flugge Prize and short listed for the Waterstones Children's book prize. Then one day, they watch as he attempts to fly over the water with wings made of colorful leaves...just trying to go home. Polar Bears– Full of fascinating information, this book explores the world of the polar bear on land and under water. At the same time, the retreating ice is resulting in more polar bears spending longer periods on land. Keeping polar bears separate from people is better for both, since polar bears that wander into communities pose a risk to people, and people often respond by killing the bears.
