Adjectives like “delicious”, “voluptuous”, “fresh”, “juicy”, and “passionate” were liberally sprinkled in his vocabulary and rolled off his tongue easily. This would forever be a tangible reminder of the day we spent with the design genius for whom “color was like breathing”. This was purely about putting together a design that had the undeniable look of a Kaffe Fassett quilt. It was interesting to see how at the end of the day a blue themed quilt was made by someone wearing a blue cardigan or a predominantly yellow quilt was put together by a student wearing a yellowish top. This is a patchwork book that pushes colour boundaries and there are some really great ideas with colours together that you just wouldn't think would look right. He is internationally known for his dazzling needlepoint and knitted works, lines of upholstery fabrics and wallpapers and most recently his quilt and fabric designs.

Yet despite this popularity he accepted the adulation with grace and humility, patiently signing quilt books and posing for cell phone photos with the attendees. There are no shortage of color photographs and most of the designs are pictured close up and then pictured again being used in the home decor. The high level of intensity and energy that he maintained all day despite having passed the age of 80 was incredible.

The designs and his unrestrained use of color were so unique and different – he wasn’t knitting – he was painting with wool. We would each be working on designing the Green Diamonds pattern from Kaffe’s Quilts in Ireland book. We finished with a show and tell as Kaffe and Brandon went around to each quilt and evaluated the final results. The key to all the patterns in this book is the saturation of colors, whether pastels, earth tones, or deep bright jewel tones, Fasset's favorite. The book will inspire you to make quilts that don't pretend to be antiques, but will instead enliven a room in a distinctly modern way.

InGlorious Patchwork-one of his most spectacular and original books-Kaffe presents more than 25 designs that draw on the essence of his colorwork. Here once again, Kaffe’s colorful vocabulary came out as he described with sincerity and passion what attracted him about each quilt. The book inspires me to make similar quilts, but also provides inspiration for use of that fabric stash that has accumulated, waiting to be turned into a treasure.

I gathered a new idea just this week from the book and even though the floral fabrics are dated - looking at the shapes and color ways i have a new quilt brewing in my mind.
