During the reading of the book there was the puzzle of whether or not the lion seen from the window by the boy and the old lady is real - is it to be a magical fantasy book? Bertie escapes from his school and meets Millie, and the two become fast friends, flying kites together.

It is, perhaps, my favourite Morpurgo which covers much the same familiar territory over which he often flys. Many years later, Bertie becomes a soldier and when he goes to France, he sees the white lion again. A British boy and a white lion cub form a bond in turn-of-the-century South Africa, and when years later, the now grown-up boy sees the lion's image on a circus poster, he vows to find his friend again. He is also the author of WAR HORSE, which has been made into a Tony Award-winning Broadway play and a Golden Globe-nominated film. When the lion dies, Bertie and Millie carve a lion out of the chalk in the hillside in memorial, before Bertie dies himself.This book is suitable for key stage 2 children as, whilst the language in the book is simple and the story is uncomplicated, I feel that the emotions that Bertie experiences can be better understand by slightly older children. I add my voice to the majority of commentators who rate this book highly for children of all ages, even into their old age! Michael is good at using his imagination thats why I like his books but out of all the books he's written The Butterfly lion is the best. e For Berite looking out into the African bush and seeing the tiger for the very first time or his first night alone in the boarding school so very far away from anything he was familiar with.

He fought as a soldier, but became a real hero for keeping a special promise and for saving the lion from a life in a cage.
