About this deal

During the reading of the book there was the puzzle of whether or not the lion seen from the window by the boy and the old lady is real - is it to be a magical fantasy book? Bertie escapes from his school and meets Millie, and the two become fast friends, flying kites together.

It is, perhaps, my favourite Morpurgo which covers much the same familiar territory over which he often flys. Many years later, Bertie becomes a soldier and when he goes to France, he sees the white lion again. A British boy and a white lion cub form a bond in turn-of-the-century South Africa, and when years later, the now grown-up boy sees the lion's image on a circus poster, he vows to find his friend again. He is also the author of WAR HORSE, which has been made into a Tony Award-winning Broadway play and a Golden Globe-nominated film. When the lion dies, Bertie and Millie carve a lion out of the chalk in the hillside in memorial, before Bertie dies himself. This book is suitable for key stage 2 children as, whilst the language in the book is simple and the story is uncomplicated, I feel that the emotions that Bertie experiences can be better understand by slightly older children. I add my voice to the majority of commentators who rate this book highly for children of all ages, even into their old age! Michael is good at using his imagination thats why I like his books but out of all the books he's written The Butterfly lion is the best. e For Berite looking out into the African bush and seeing the tiger for the very first time or his first night alone in the boarding school so very far away from anything he was familiar with.

Renowned for his compelling storytelling, Michael Morpurgo is an iconic figure in the world of children's literature. I particularly liked the descriptions of the African settings, perhaps because my parents both grew up in Africa.

Comment: The spine or cover may be slightly worn but the book is otherwise in good condition and will provide thought provoking read! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Later, when fighting in France in the First World War, he saves two men's lives and is given a Victoria Cross. He has written more than 100 books and has won the Smarties Prize, the Whitbread Award, and most recently the Blue Peter Book Award for PRIVATE PEACEFUL. A young boy named Michael runs away from a boarding school and meets an old lady living in a big cottage. However, he is carefully ambiguous enough to allow a wide verity of readers to identify directly with him. The language and accents, transport you into the story, also, helping the listener appreciate unfamiliar accents and dialects. Millie, who has become a nurse in the hopes of finding Bertie, reads about him in a newspaper and the two are reunited.

for example, not greiving at your father's death because you 'didn't know him well enough to love him' and like how the white lion almost instantly recognized his master at once, after all those years . The story explores the childhood of Bertie in Africa, his move to Britain, his friendship with Millie as well as his participation in World War Two. Morpurgo has never written a lovelier story and the simple drawings of Christian Birmingham, an illustrator i love, really grace the whole thing. He fought as a soldier, but became a real hero for keeping a special promise and for saving the lion from a life in a cage. However, the story's darker elements are counterbalanced by a wonderful power of hope and the final part provides a twist that few readers are likely to anticipate. You could conduct a survey to find out your friends favourite animals and show the results in different types of table / graph? He, a soldier in the 'Great war' and the relationship they formed and maintained with the small lion cub he had befriended in Africa and the twists and turns of their story ending with the outline of the lion cut out on the chalk hill above the house on which hundreds of butterflies land to take their nourishment. I bought it to complete a Goodreads challenge but after looking at it several times as I was browsing my bookshelf I was reluctant to read it. As a history degree graduate, I love any book that attempts to incite an interest in history from children and I think this book does this perfectly.
