About this deal

Compared to Hamid Sardar or Steve McCurry's (although he sometimes suffers from the same flaws) and other's works, it's plain bad. Jimmy himself combined with beautiful video material will guide you through breathtaking footage, but above all uncovers the beauty of day-to-day life from all over the world.

i would have loved to get more information, now it is max 0,5 - 1 page of very high level information. Once the barrier of fear was bridged and a mutual language of awe was developed, a door of reciprocal empathy and understanding opened. He could even add more text about his journey to get there, interviews or dialogs with some of the people, put a name to them, etc. They were understandably reluctant and afraid of this stranger and I was often met with scepticism towards my intentions. Be adventurous and immerse yourself in this visual tale, carefully peeling back the layers to get lost amongst the dense foliage taking yourself on a journey of discovery. My dream is to connect with the all-encompassing wealth of ancient cultures living in harmony with themselves and Mother Earth. What I feel a bit ambivalent about is the scanty and seemingly rather romanticized text that accompanies them.

Nevertheless a rather wonderful book, and if you want to get an impression of the once vast cultural diversity in the world it is worth getting hold of a copy. This tribute to vibrant tribal cultures around the world is a must-have for any lover of documentary photography. It became customary for me to never enter a community with a camera in sight, and it was normal to wait up to two weeks or more before the first picture was taken.

On its own, if one has no comparison material or if this is one of the first ethno photo books one has read, it looks okay. The book is expensive, but such lavish photos on high quality heavy paper with backdrops of pristine landscape and with summaries in three languages of their origins, lifestyle, religions and diets. Instead, Nelson has selected picturesque elements from each place, added a pinch of untruths, removed political and social context and painted their deliberate and preventable destruction as effectively a fait accompli. They are told to look sternly, their faces washed out because Nelson heavily de-saturates/filters his pictures.

As for the Indigenous communities whom he has engaged, does he not recognize politeness laced with an ironic smile? This man only wants to force his own ideas on the photos, to publish them in books and to show them to everyone so that people will think he’s a great photographer. Jimmy Nelson’s] words of ‘authenticity, purity, beauty,’ are hollow adoration while his romanticized images are nothing but his own reflection. This elegant and evocative collection of photographs documents the unseen lives and traditions of over 15 million people from 35 of the world’s last indigenous tribes.Coincidentally we have been asked whether we would consider hosting an exhibiton of Nelson’s pictures – which of course we will not.

For this collection has a dark side, it highlights the effects of plastic and pollution within or waters.Kinda reminds me of Jared Diamond's theory of how geographical factors account to why some civilizations thrive faster and better than others. No: "Tibet is under the sovereignty of China, which is viewed as illegal occupation by the Tibetan government in exile". We will be around for a long time, fighting for our land, living in this world and continuing to create our children. His portraits poignantly capture the dignity of these tribal people and highlight the uncomplicated serenity in their extraordinary lives, customs and society, all the while documenting the vanishing harmony between man and nature.
