About this deal

Comey’s experience as a New York City mob prosecutor brings plenty of credibility to this fast-paced legal drama. That unique perspective gives the novel much of its allure, but it’s the unforgettable characters, shocking twists, and courtroom scenes as authentic as they are dramatic that will leave readers looking forward to more from this bold new talent in the genre. By itself, this would not be a particularly bad outline for a crime novel, but many of the details are absurd. In the Mafia trial, when it appears that Frenchie's evidence will convict D'Amico, the mobster secretly passes a note to the prosecution team, in an effort to make a deal. In addition to showing some of the the inner workings of the Southern District of New York, Comey's novel highlights the rivalry between the Manhattan D.

Five years later, he joined Bridgewater Associates, a Connecticut-based investment fund, as its General Counsel. S. Attorney's Office, who compete to prosecute the same high profile cases, for the credit and the glory. I do feel like, at times, it was an overload of information, but this was a page-turner and I can't wait to see what's next for James Comey's dive into writing.

Carleton’s supervisor, for instance, is a Puerto Rican lesbian who is described as a “ball of energy and humor.

There was plenty of tension to keep the reader on the edge of their seat and the book’s pacing was good.Nora is working her dream job, while trying to raise her young daughter with the help of her mother. The main character was a female ADA prosecutor and given the mob's involvement with the case, the FBI is brought in for the federal charges. S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from January 2002 to December 2003, and subsequently the United States Deputy Attorney General from December 2003 to August 2005 in the administration of President George W.

I haven't read as much as I'd have liked to in the past couple weeks because I've been trying to concentrate on the LSAT, but I got through this one in about three sit-downs. This is the problem with celebrity authors - and Comey just about falls into that - in that they take short cuts to the top. The investigative group disappears down several rabbit holes before the evidence they need surfaces. However, the murdered governor has an estranged and disgruntled wife who has excellent motives for killing him. A key part of Burke’s trial defense turns on a narrow point in the law on hearsay, which, as Comey capably demonstrates, is much more permissive and flexible than the public generally understands.Comey’s debut offers us ample misdirection along with the kind of twists and turns that keep us turning the pages, in this case furiously.

And as Comey demonstrates in the book, the process of collecting and analyzing this sort of digital detritus is in fact central to federal criminal investigations of pretty much all types today. It's about a murder investigation that reveals deadly connections between high-ranking politicians and the mafia. Donald Trump didn’t do much for the world, but in firing James Comey, he gave crime fiction an exciting new talent, and one that should be on every crime fiction fan’s radar.

There were a couple of really charming characters - Benny, the long term FBI agent and Frenchie, the criminal associate of the NY mob who endeared himself to the jury and showed off his knowledge of the work of Marc Chagall. Federal prosecutor Nora Carleton has spent years building a case against a powerful New York mobster. Kyra Burke is facing life imprisonment for the murder of her disgraced predator of a husband, ex-Governor Antonio (Tony), Burke. I’d be interested to know how much os this book was plotted and written by Mr Comey himself and how much help he had but overall I enjoyed it. Despite these considerable problems, the result is still a tolerable legal procedural grounded by Comey’s undeniable expertise in federal investigations, which tend to be much more boring than the public thinks, even when the investigation is about murder.
