About this deal

That time they were anxious about attending a student conference away from home, but faced their fears and had a great experience. Here's the truth: When you make a brave decision, you’re setting yourself up for potential discomfort. Our mission is to improve emotional wellbeing through therapy and educational resources, for those who cannot access therapy services. For example, maybe you don't enjoy your current corporate job and dream of working for a nonprofit instead.

And, the more intimate, real and raw the blog, the more vulnerable and exposed I feel — the greater the fear. I would love to hear your stories of bravery or the struggles you have with making those courageous steps. The examples and strategies will mainly focus on the years spanning the beginning of adolescence to the transition to college or the workforce (approximately age 10 to age 19).As I read through this list, I couldn’t help but think: what a lot of joy we’re leaving on the table. We’ve all been a kid going to a first day of school, talked to someone with the risk of being rejected, or had to go to a doctor and get a needle. It involves an ability (or an instinct) to sense opportunities and then sus out the right response and timing. After your child has selected a challenge and succeeded at it, add it to the roster of family stories. Joyful, appealing artwork and simple text help little readers to understand that bravery comes in all shapes and sizes, and that we should always feel proud when we do something out of our comfort zone.

Instead, have an open conversation about your child’s interests, and any situations that evoke a combination of fascination and nervousness. Repetition over time can create habits and behaviors that are second nature or done without much thought. Many times, people don't pursue their career dreams because they suffer from imposter syndrome and think they're not good enough. There is something about motherhood that breaks you of any feelings you had about caring how you appear. Children often look to adults for information about how they should feel when things don’t go their way. Awareness of your and others’ emotions is at the heart of influencing, ‘reading people’, impactful communication, deep relating and authentic connection at work and in life. Far too many youth are growing up without such supportive mentors – and far, far too many are growing up in situations of active abuse, neglect, poverty and discrimination.

Getting quiet and going inward is the only way you’ll find the answers your soul is inviting you to explore. Walking through the range of possible outcomes and weighing the relative likelihood of each could help them realise that the risk is worth taking. This program has helped me shift my entire thinking and attitudes about myself, helping me to prioritize my health and wellbeing.

You may go through multiple rounds of interviews, but grit requires you keep at it and maintain your confidence and grace. Professional courage is a special brand of bravery because it is rarely defined as an impulsive battlefield moment with life-saving potential. Accountability requires courage because when you do well, you must be confident enough to feel good about your success, and when you can do better, you must be confident enough to admit the gap and fill it.

Maybe I will lose people from my circle, maybe I will fail — if so, this is ok (well, accepting that this is ok will always be an ongoing process). I know when my own child is at that right level of challenged (but not overwhelmed) when she’s singing a lot – if I regularly hear her rich alto rising from the floorboards, all is well. Rationally, we know we won’t die, and our world probably won’t end, but it’s hard to get to ration when we are in a primal state of fear. Watch for signs that your child is withdrawing, spending long periods of time alone, or seems bored in their studies, as these may be other signals that they need more challenge. Bravery is a positive way of thinking that motivates someone to action, regardless of danger, risk, or challenge. From there, they could talk to a few like-minded friends about getting involved, and ask the more extraverted ones to drum up interest. If your fears are based on doubt or unlikely consequences, the brave thing to do is move past that fear and move forward. Increase your comfort and use of abstract and strategic thinking to gain a broader perspective in work and life. Maybe your 8th-grader is trying to decide whether to take an honours engineering class, and you tell the story of the time they discovered a broken-down bicycle in their grandfather’s garage and immediately started fixing it.
