About this deal

Overall, Dead Inside was a dark and disturbing read that turned out to be one of the most gripping novels I have read in a while despite its subject matter. Soon after the pair go on a date, the protagonist is nervous as he has a horrible track record with living women and when Helen invites him back to her place he goes. this book crosses many rules of morality and humanity and has on page sexual violence that’s very graphic.

The actual story here isn’t bad at all but again, I doubt this would ever happen in real life so remember, if you go along for this ride and throw common sense and reality out the window, it’s better enjoyed that way. That being said, with the horror genre you very much have to take responsibility for yourself and if you do read extreme horror then that’s up to you. It is rare that the namelessness of a main character has a meaning, a significance above and beyond giving them a sense of mystery or objectivity. He's able to accomplish this fucked-up exploration of self-discovery because of his job as a night shift hospital security guard. Falling into an abyss of social norms in this mundane world might feel safe and comfortable for some, while for others, any attempt to embrace what most consider as normal would be dreadful. The relationship between them sours despite Helen asking him to stop shutting her out which he does to an extent but it isn’t the same as before. Of course, you can always counterargue about these things, I’m not trying to make a point in my review. I listened to this one on audible because I just happened to have a spare credit, and if you’re doing that, stick with it because actually that Narrator really does fit the story quite well.

Anyone who can make me laugh like a hyena while inserting American Psycho, Nick Cave and Cannibal Corpse references is more than welcome to be a part of my world, or at least a part of my books shelf. But even though many scenes were gross, the main characters weird, and the whole setting utterly depraved I enjoyed the excellent prose and couldn't put the book down. In Chandler Morrison’s Dead Inside it is only later into the book that the namelessness of the lead character, a part-time security guard in a hospital, starts gradually making sense and unveils its true purpose, a meaningful one, which sheds light on every action and every reaction he generates: he doesn’t want to be seen, noticed, to exist even. One is a hospital security guard who has taboo sexual desires, the other a maternity doctor who has an appetite for something you won’t find on any restaurant menu. It’s a feeling that’s hard to explain but let’s just say, you feel guilty for reading this and will want to read a book to cleanse yourself because it’s that grimy and obscenely sexual. This is an interesting book to review because I saw an awful lot of people saying it was the “sickest thing I’ve ever read” or “I couldn’t get past page 1! In contrast to MC she actually longs to be “normal” but at the same time she is much more able to share her darkness with someone else.
