About this deal

As you help Danny make choices in this choose your own adventure, there is a clear cause and effect relationship shown between making good choices and maybe not great choices. The clanking armour and fire-breathing beasts of the famous Dungeons and Dragons universe abound in this gloriously dark and dramatic book. Create your own hero, build your inventory find new weapons and armour, all while battling your way through grand quests. Compared to 'A Lonely Road' where the prompts were broad, this zine prompted you to 'connect the dots' instead of 'fill in the blanks'.

Some three decades earlier, Jorge Luis Borges’s short story “The Garden of Forking Paths” (1941) imagines the unfinished novel of a Chinese civil servant in which all the possible outcomes of an event occur, rather than just one. It falls to you, do you follow the tracks leading off up the mountain or do you wait for help that may or may not even come? He’s been looking for more choose your own adventure books and I think he might like a couple of these. Anson believes that frustration is also part of the appeal of these books: “As a kid, you might not know it, but you also want frustration. From the way Packard describes these “terrible” choices, it seems that he probably means the kind of poor choices you might imagine a twice-divorced man has made. They understand that going back is the point—not the making but the re-making of choices, the revocability of it all. It feels like grace, as if the book were not just forgiving but rewarding what you always considered to be cheating: flipping through the pages to find the endings you wanted, then reverse-engineering the choices that would get you there. Their confessions carry top notes of guilt, he says, but he suspects that, beneath this anxiety, they actually relish their transgressions.

Another said, “It’s hard enough to get children to read, and you’re just making it harder, with all these choices. The book – which may take you to Paris or Tokyo – investigates the question of whether it is decision or destiny that controls how our lives will unfold.

A ninja in feudal Japan who is a soldier for hire, you can choose to lay siege to a castle, defend your home province from an army or act as a bodyguard to a powerful lord. The last one I read as an adult was Cinderella, Ninja Warrior, so I was excited to read ones which seemed actually well done. This means that when your child likes the first book in the series, they’ll have plenty more books to read in the rest of the series.

Choose between a mind-reading device, a time-travel machine, or the Killitron 3000 for your adventure. There’s an interesting irony at work in the way Packard narrates his life: as he was developing a series of form-breaking narratives that actively foregrounded intentional choices, he came to feel that in his own life his choices weren’t intentional enough. Lively, beautiful to look at and packed with whimsical twists and turns, this is a great interactive adventure for readers of any age.
