About this deal

To say I was excited for this novel is an understatement. I loved Behind Closed Doors so I couldn't wait to see what B.A Paris had in store for me this time. My goodness, this suspense novel broke me into little pieces. Not for the mystery part of the story, but the human side of the story. I cannot recall reading a book of this genre that decides to also delve into the topic of motherhood and post-partum trauma while also dealing with the case of a missing person. Author Katie Sise manages to write with such compassion and empathy that I felt my heart would never recover from the levels of emotion it provoked in me. I have no idea why since my miscarriage in the fall of 2022 I keep stumbling upon storylines in my reading and watching leisure time but it sure is helping me deal with the stages of grief. Right from the start, I did find Karen to be a rather unsympathetic character so I worried about whether I would actually care about the situation she eventually finds herself in! She’s one of those women for whom life is always a competition-if you’re busy then she’s even busier, no one is as tired as her…well you get the picture! I wondered what attracted her best friend Eve to such a self centred women as childless Eve didn’t seem to have the stresses of family life to give them that connection and it would have wound me up terribly if my friend assumed I was never exhausted just because I didn’t have any kids! So it was such a lovely gesture for Eve to help Karen find a place for a peaceful break away from all her family but one Karen will certainly regret taking! And eventually I did start to worry about why Karen was being targeted and by whom although things become clear quite early on in the proceedings.

The Break - Marian Keyes The Break - Marian Keyes

But I'm feeling a misery in the same way I felt it after reading Birdie. We can argue that the women in this book are strong and resilient, but I'm so sorry that they're put to the test at all, and I don't know what I can possibly do to help them, or share the wealth of fortune that's allowed me to land in a life very different from theirs. This is a lens-shifting book. Julietta Singh’s meditation to her daughter is an immeasurable gift. It takes you into the experience of coming of age as a Brown girl who stands in the shadow of a society that fails to tell its whole truth and tries to hide its ugliness. With poignant, aching, beautiful and deeply loving prose, Singh brings Brown girls into the sun, and makes you want to change the ways of the world for our young people and for us all.” —Imani Perry The Break by Daniel Hurst is another pulse-pounding thriller from a master of the genre. I could not wait to get my hands on his latest, and I was not at all disappointed. The Break was a power house novel. I will say it does start out a bit slow but it only helped in the build up to what was going on. I don't mind the slow burn as it gives you time to absorb the characters and the plot. The twist was absolutely wild and had my jaw on the ground. As always, Katie Sise, spoke straight to my thriller loving heart and gave me exactly what I had wanted.... A Five Star read. I've read a lot of fantasy / YA books lately so I read this as a bit of a pallette cleanser since it was fine & short but I reeaallly didn't enjoy it!! I'm too nosey though so skimmed through most of the book until the end.Thank you so much to Edelweiss, House of Anansi Press, and Katherena Vermette for the opportunity to read a copy of this book in exchange for a review. Cass starts to think someone is watching the house, that someone has been in the house. When she goes shopping and is leaving for home she can't find her car. She KNOWS where she parked, so it must have been stolen. Cass and the parking attendant look everywhere, on all the different floors only to eventually find her car.....

Thank you to Edelweiss, Ingram Publisher Services and Katherena Vermette for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. When Stella, a young Métis mother, looks out her window one evening and spots someone in trouble on the Break — a barren field on an isolated strip of land outside her house — she calls the police to alert them to a possible crime. It is a priority for CBC to create products that are accessible to all in Canada including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive challenges.

The Break is an emotional, powerful and intense literary thriller about the strength and love that connects a family of women and friends together, while dealing with a violent act. The Break refers to a field between two rolls of houses but also refers to broken relationships. I really enjoyed the thriller aspect of the book as well. Giving you a glimpse of these traumas while not completely over whelming you with the use of the fictional thriller part.

The mouse that roared': the Falklands and Gibraltar in Thatcher's (Greater) Britain - Ezequiel Mercau To sum it all up it was an emotional demanding, interesting, suspenseful, and an engaging read that will stay with me for a very long time. Would recommend!! Karen a busy mother between work, her husband and her two children wants a break. And for a friend, Karen, is telling her about a little guest house where she can be by herself. It was one of those situations where I thought I knew what was going on, but I kept pushing through the tedious chapters and hoping I was wrong and that the ending would surprise me. It didn't. It's way too easy to work out. You might even be starting to suspect the answers before beginning if you read the author's previous book. Karen has a full-time job and also looks after her husband Peter and their two young boys. She feels like she doesn't have a moment to herself so when her friend Eve suggests she book a couple of nights at a holiday home, Karen thinks it's just what she needs - a short break.Despite the horror of the assault, and the uncomfortable matters discussed, the book helped me gain a better understanding of the discrimination First Nations people face, and the generational trauma that appears impossible to escape. THE BREAK by KATHERENA VERMETTE is a dark, gritty, heartbreaking, and a powerful intergenerational family saga that was quite intense and depressing to read. The Break refers to a piece of land between two rows of houses which is outside the home of Stella a young Métis mother who witnessed a violent act on the Break. I think The Break also refers to a more general break in things such as relationships, ourselves, and our past. Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods, on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, with the woman sitting inside—the woman who was killed. She’s been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It’s a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm. Her husband would be furious if he knew she’d broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. And she probably would only have been hurt herself if she’d stopped. After thoroughly enjoying "The New Friends" just a couple of months ago and devouring THE BREAK in just four hours today, I have to say that Daniel Hurst has earnt the honour of being my new go-to author as well as a new favourite. I just love his easy style written in such a way the reader is drawn into a tangled web of secrets, lies and deception and watching it all unravel with glee. His chapters are also short and snappy, which are my favourite kind, keeping the story moving along at a fast moving pace. And despite knowing exactly what is going on, the ending is an explosive one that brings everything together and making it by far a thoroughly enjoyable and addictive read.

Jeff gets up, stands behind her at the sink and pulls her into his arms, forcing her into a hug. She waits until he's done so she can ring out the wet cloth. King's men', 'Queen's rebels' and 'last outposts': Ulster and Rhodesia in an age of imperial retreat - Donal Lowry But this is no ordinary holiday home – it contains a dark and disturbing secret. Because Karen isn’t alone here – someone is watching her. Waiting for the right moment to spring the trap and plunge her into a nightmare she’ll never forget.A tale of queer homemaking and expansive kinship—of deciphering family pasts, shaping domestic presence, and imagining unknown futurities of belonging. . . . An honest and unassuming illustration of making thought public, of finding praxis in the quotidian—and daring to linger there.” —Christopher Schaberg, Los Angeles Review of Books The family at the heart of the book has suffered grievous loss. Years earlier, Kookom’s daughter, Lorraine, was murdered, leaving Lorraine’s own daughter, Stella, to be raised by Kookom. Stella is now a wife and mother herself, with a toddler and a six-month-old baby. Stella’s white husband fears something awful will happen if she visits Kookom’s sketchy neighbourhood, so Stella finds herself more or less cut off at home. Kookom’s other daughter, Cheryl, is a functional alcoholic who manages to maintain her job at an art gallery. Cheryl’s two daughters, Louisa and Paulina, have children whose fathers are mostly absent. From Pax Britannica to Pax Americana? The end of empire and the collapse of Australia's Cold War policy - James Curran After reading Open House and We Were Mothers, I knew I would be a long time fan of Katie Sise. Both of these books were 5 star reads that kept me up late into the night. So when I saw The Break, pop up on netgalley, I knew I would not stop until I had an ARC (or E-ARC) in my hand. The Break is a harrowing yet lucidly written intergenerational family saga that examines the repercussions of a horrific act of violence.
