The writing is excellent as always and Jack as a character has developed from the last book although he remains a complex character , we learn that juggling work and home life isn’t always easy and this leaves him at odds with his wife Maggie at times . This is the first book that I have read from this author as it was handed down to me and will be the last that I read from this author.Knowing he could get into serious trouble for helping Ridley and with the case against Middleton starting to open up, Jack has a very difficult time ahead.

This is the fourth book in the DC Jack Warr series by author Lynda LaPlante and is another excellent read. Pure Evil' is the fourth in Lynda La Plante's Jack Warr series, centring on the dedicated and skilled detective who struggles to be a team player and isn't averse to bending the rules when it comes to the pursuit of justice. Then his boss DCI Ridley is removed without explanation and a new DCI takes over who just wants to clear open cases.
The supplementary stories of Jack’s mentor DCI Ridley and his abrupt removal from the public eye, and mother Penny’s secret rendezvous, are slow-burners.

The Middleton case becomes more and more compelling and takes a disturbingly dark turn and discerning the truth from the multitude of lies is a perplexing puzzle. Meanwhile his old boss, Ridley is mysteriously absent from work and his replacement DCI Clarke tells the staff not to try and contact him and won’t explain any further. As Rodney Middleton awaits trial, Detective Jack Warr is warned by his mentor DCI Ridley that they have only scratched the surface of the man's crimes. There is a second story line involving, Jack, the main character, working for a previous supervisor, who is being investigated for allegedly murdering a woman he was seeing.I love the interaction between Jack and wife Maggie, with both of them trying to juggle intense work situations as well as caring for their daughter, with the help of Penny, Jacks mother, and also keeping their marriage alive. Some of his actions in this book do end in dire consequences, but not necessarily as a direct result of his actions, more the gradual pursuit of proving Ridley's innocence.
