About this deal

Thrillers lovers...read this book! You won't be disappointed. Also thanks to L.V. Matthews for chatting to me about this book when I finished it You don't need to have read the Artemis series to keep up, but I appreciated the references to Artemis's schemes and it definitely did help to have that base familiarity with the worldbuilding and a preliminary fondness for the twins. Also, I imagine that all the mentions of Artemis, who never physically appears in this book, might get a bit tiring if you don't care. Shakespeare was interested in twins. He included not one but two pairs of identical twins in The Comedy of Errors, as well as Viola and Sebastian in Twelfth Night. The latter are obviously not identical, but after Viola disguises herself as a man, they apparently become indistinguishable (some suspension of disbelief is required). This leads to all manner of comedic confusion. Of course, Shakespeare himself was also the father of twins, Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet died at 11, about five years before Twelfth Night was written, and this knowledge gives added poignancy to Viola and Sebastian’s reunion at the end of the play, each having believed the other dead. I am a bit concerned about the fact that, with the (Eurasian) Butlers barely present: Domovoi only mentioned in passing and Juliet completely absent from the narrative, the only people of color are villains: the murderous Hispanic nun who randomly switches out Spanish for English (often cognates, and the grammar of her poor English feels more contrived than natural), and a Japanese tech supplier who sells primarily to criminals ... though the main antagonist is an English duke.

Henry could never work again, and though they both remarried, Jacobs considered they had "sad lonely lives in the end." Alfred died in 1978 and Henry in 1980. This technically COULD be read without the original series, but I wouldn't recommend it. I think it relies a bit too heavily on at least some knowledge of the original series. Plus, you'd miss out on references and cameos, etc. Barbie was only 29 years old when he went there,” says Jacobs. “It staggers me to think that someone so young could act in such an evil way. It was unfortunate for the Twins – they happened to be caught during his early days, when he was trying to make an impression and break the will of the French.”

More in Books

Two is for Twins byWendy Cheyette Lewison: Embark on a delightful journey through the alphabet with twins, exploring the world of twins and the special things that make them unique. I liked that it continued on with some of the subtle good messages and morals, such as being environmentally friendly. Always good for children reading. A complicated twin relationship if ever there was one, involving not only rivalry and scheming but also incest. Jaime and Cersei are of course baddies, and Cersei in particular seems irredeemably evil (she is considerably less sympathetic in the books than in the TV series, which is quite a feat). But there is still something touching about the love they have for each other. It is Cersei’s only humanising quality. The plot is also kind of haywire and unbelievable, unlike the tightly knit, logical (there’s that word again!) and believable narratives of the AF series.

It soon becomes clear that there is a horrendous event that both twins witnessed when they were teens that has shaped the course of their lives. Whilst Margo has no memory of this event it is clear that Cora does and she desperately wants to stop Margo from uncovering the details surrounding it. Whilst I am not painting Cora in the best light I did feel for her at times, I often questioned whether she was trying to protect Margo out of love? Twin to Twin byMargaret O'Hair: Join a set of twins as they explore their special connection and learn that being a twin means having a built-in best friend.

Margo is a live-in nanny and Cora is a dancer on the cusp of her big break into the dance world. They are very different, but as twins, they share a remarkable bond. Haunted by an unhappy childhood, the secrets of their past are returning to haunt them. Can their bond survive the jealousy and rivalry they are living with? Or will the past destroy them forever? Always Twins byTeri Weidner: Follow the adventures of twins as they experience the ups and downs of daily life, highlighting the special bond and shared experiences of being twins. Not so Good Points: To be honest I have none. I know Cora was supposed to be the "bad" twin but I actually loved her. I didn't like Raff much but other than that it was a perfect thriller! What Alfred and Henry Newton did next is the subject of Peter Jacobs’ new book – The Twins: The SOE's Brothers of Vengeance – a story which sounds more like a Hollywood film plot than real-life events: two tap-dancing brothers who vow bloody revenge on the Nazis, join an undercover military operation, and have to survive the brutality of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Twins in the Classroom: 100 Fun Activities for Twins byKristie L. Smith Nikitin: Discover a variety of engaging and educational activities designed specifically for twins to enjoy together in the classroom.

This book landed on my TBR because I was intrigued by the blurb. I requested it not because I know the author, but simply because I was intrigued. What a fabulous read it turned out to be. I have already started hunting for a copy of the author’s other book – The Prank.

I had a lot of expectations from this book, having LOVED the Artemis Fowl series. But while the story is amusing, it has none of the finesse and tightness of plot that the original series possessed. Too many things ‘just happen’ because of magic or superior fairy technology or timing or coincidence. In the AF books, too, there was magic and technology, but it had it’s own laws and rules which made it believable. The best fantasy and world building is one where there are convincing explanations for places and things and actions and powers- there is no randomness. There is an inherent sense tying the fantasy together. The Fowl Twins does not have this discipline and logic - there is disarray and chaos. It’s sloppy writing, which is a shame. Just Like Twins byBobbi G. Weiss: Follow the adventures of two best friends who are so close that they consider themselves like twins, sharing laughter and supporting each other along the way. I'm Having Twins byParis Morris: Follow a young girl's excitement and anticipation as she learns that her family is expecting twins, exploring the ups and downs of becoming an older sibling to twins. Here we have a couple of guys of war-fighting age and physique who are absolutely passionate about getting revenge on the Germans,” Jacobs says. “But something the SOE had to do in the early days was temper their aggression. At first the brothers wanted to kill and maim as many as Germans they could. The SOE had to say, ‘Actually you can be more useful than that.’ This was not about just killing. It was more subtle than that.”
