About this deal

The book identifies the use of type “in isolation” as a growing and influential contemporary trend, but it also looks at the historical antecedents of this sort of work. In an introductory essay, Mark Sinclair, deputy editor of Creative Review, provides an overview of how typography has evolved from the early “type only”experiments of the Dadaists and Futurists, via Modernism and Post-Modernism, to today’s radical typographic trends, digitally made and shared instantly on the internet. The hundreds of examples will inspire designers to have a go themselves. In this book you will also see how scripts from the past and present intertwine. Type Matters! A straightforward book of text type specimens, with some interesting introductory notes. This is one of my favorite specimen books because of the quantity of typefaces shown and the extensive text specimens. The book’s British origin means some faces lesser-known to US readers are included. — Christopher Slye Typographic Quest by West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co.

Fonts.com has made a lot of the U&lc archives available in low-res pdf. — Ben Trissel The Elements of Content Strategy by Erin Kissane A book that presents an unorthodox approach to learning how to draw. From the Publisher. Classic modern design never goes out of style: it is merely retired or subtly adapted to its given place and time. Having surveyed handwritten, new vintage, and new ornamental tendencies in type and lettering, graphic-design guru Steven Heller now turns his encyclopedic gaze on Modernism. This book will guide users on how to create their own sketchnotes. It teaches you how to capture your thoughts, remember key information, and enhance your sketching abilities. Sketch Your World Another cherished overview of type, arranged as a kind of tour through styles and history. Chapter by chapter, it explores type from its beginning up to the 20th century. This is another book I read from beginning to end. It’s also carefully designed and a pleasure to look at and hold. — Christopher Slye The Anatomy of Type by Stephen Coles This visual book displays the work of top typographic artists. It can provide inspiration for those who are into typography or looking for creative typography ideas. Need Great Design Ideas? Here is an ambitious book that covers a lot of ground and does it well. Written and designed by my friends Tamye Riggs and James Grieshaber, respectively, it works as both a visual introduction to typefaces in use in a variety of settings, but can also serve as a colorful reference for future typographic projects. — Christopher Slye Anatomy of a Typeface by Alexander Lawson Graphic Design, Referenced: A Visual Guide to the Language, Applications, and History of Graphic Design by Bryony Gomez-Palacio & Armin Vit I also like that it defines the terms “calligraphy” and “lettering” to easily understand, what it's NOT lettering –like “brush lettering” (but no worries, I have a whole post where we are going deep into the real definitions here =] (you can also find this book in Spanish here) In this book, top artists will provide you with their personal perspective on lettering. They will show you the tools they use and the correct techniques to use them. Type: A Visual History of Typefaces & Graphic Styles The first thing to consider would be, what are you expecting to get from the book? because if you are looking for step by step instructions on how to construct alphabets, that book would be a completely different one as if you just want to “get inspired” or are looking for more technical knowledge about lettering or Calligraphy.

A Book Apart authors take on important topics, distilling the essentials down into beautiful little volumes you can slip into your bag for reading and reference anytime, anywhere. Erin Kissane’s The Elements of Content Strategy is a favorite; the last read left me thinking about the importance of how writing serves your readers and finding your (blog’s) own voice. — Liz Galle Pretty Pictures by Marian Bantjes To accommodate the vast amount of material, we have divided the subject into two volumes. This, the first volume, covers pre–20th-century typeface specimens, with texts by editor Cees de Jong and collector Jan Tholenaar.

A book that will teach you basic drawing techniques in bite-sized sections, and how they can be applied when sketching. It covers tone, composition and texture among others. Playing With Sketches If you ever feel like you are running out of good ideas, find great ones with help from these few handy books. The Drawing Mind Garfield takes a lighthearted approach to the historical aspects of typefaces, which is immensely helpful to beginners & type nerds alike. He also examines our reactions to fonts, which was the most important part of the book for me. It’s one thing to learn about the rules of typography and what makes excellent form; it’s another thing to learn about how people can react to it since that has a direct relation to how well a font may perform for the designer. Having insight into how people may react and the feeling that the font imparts are crucial to the design and execution process. Being able to predict reactions helps to make decisions with the font design, as well. As I’m sure many font designers will attest, there are multiple versions and revisions of every single letterform before the final version is settled upon!

In this third edition, acclaimed type designer Erik Spiekermann brings his type classic fully up to date on mobile and web typography. He also includes scores of new visual examples on how to effectively communicate with type and a full selection of new typefaces that are used and referenced throughout the book. This sketchbook will provide an insight into the works of top graphic designers. It features notes, sketches, and complete illustrations, and explains how the designers came up with their ideas and techniques used. Sketching from the Imagination
