About this deal

With danger and warring motives at every junction, will Hal and Uncle Nat be able to crack the case before their time in Germany is up? The old family home (more of a castle, with a train station inside) is big enough to hide many secrets. I did miss being on the train the whole time, I feel like that always adds a nice closed circle, or even locked room element, to the mystery. Legend has it the Kratzensteins, a family of rich and powerful railway tycoons, are cursed, but there is no such thing as a curse, is there .

A mysterious letter from an old friend asks Hal and Uncle Nat to help investigate a spooky supernatural mystery. Sign up to hear about the latest books, brilliant competitions, fun activities, brand new resources for teachers and events happening near you as well as the latest World Book Day news and how you can celebrate reading all year round. With a whole host of new and exciting characters, an incredible setting and plenty of twists and turns, I cannot recommend this enough. This time, Hal and Uncle Nat - now well-recognised for their detective endeavours across the world - are invited to Germany to help solve a mystery.

Danger at Dead Man’s Pass can be read as a stand-alone novel, or enjoyed as part of the Adventures on Trains series. Fans of Agatha Christie, or, more recently, Robin Stevens and Katherine Woodfine, should adore this mystery which makes a steam trail all of its own. The mysteries are so twisty, and the whole new cast feels realistic every time because of the location (looking at you, Death in Paradise! We’re delighted to bring you this thrilling adventure to enjoy in a book club setting – whether with friends, family or your school mates. Elisa Paganelli was born in Modena (Italy) in 1985, and since childhood books have been her bestfriends.

From a creaking spooky old house at the foot of the Harz mountains, they take the Kratzenstein family’s funeral train to the peak of the Brocken Mountain. There's a family curse, a spooky mountain, a healthy amount of Faust, and it's just thick, solid adventure from that point on. I am so glad I picked up the first book on a whim early in 2020, because I have devoured every entry so far.

A curse, a very strange family, a missing will, witches, a spooky castle and a steam train gave great background to the story which was as always beautifully illustrated by Elisa Paganelli. After completing artistic studies she made a career in advertising and has been the founder and owner of a small award winning design and trade business.

The thought of a private line to a rather unusual large house is sure to capture children's imaginations and thrill them. There's a scene at the end, for example, that is just deliciously tense nailbiting stuff and normally I'd be all 'yeah, whatever' but because it's written by Leonard and Sedgman, it is BRILLIANT. This is a story about deception, about detective work, the importance of learning other languages, about friendship and family, about secrets and codes, and most importantly about trains. Hal and his Uncle Nat are back in their fourth adventure, Danger at Dead Man's Pass, and I couldn't have been more excited!Wildly funny, with hairpin plot bends and inventive characters, this series is firmly on track to become a bestseller. I honestly can not believe that an installment in this series actually got less than 4 stars and that makes me so sad.
