All the color and flavor of the sea and pine-covered Maine countryside.” TALK about your grandmother’s kitchen, in the mid-1900s, and how it was very different than your own today. ( Blueberries for Sal was written in 1948.) Then interview a grandparent about food preparation and preservation when they were children. Video tape or record the interview if possible. My family still has an audio recording from a dozen years ago of an interview my daughters did with each of their four grandparents about their childhood memories. It is a family treasure for sure.

The adventures of little Sal and the baby bear while hunting for blueberries with their mothers are beautifully illustrated in this classic children’s book. I especially enjoyed the old fashioned quality of the drawings as they capture the spirit of a long gone era. Sal’s mother realises her daughter is missing and I’m sure this would be a freaky tale if we were let inside her head. I mean, if you see a little bear cub you know the mother’s around somewhere, right? No? That doesn’t seem to cross her mind. She calmly and collectedly sets about looking for Sal. Little Sal and Little Bear both lose their mothers while eating blueberries and almost end up with the other's mother

Always Anjali

Blueberries for Sal is a Caldecott Honor Book that was written in 1948. Life has changed quite a bit in the last 70+ years, but this story has stood the test of time.

The Magician's Hat

Because we do not have a copy of the official Before Five in a Row manual, these activities for Blueberries for Sal were pulled together from various sources, which I have linked throughout here for easy reference. Baking Blueberry Muffins Plant blueberries in autumn or winter leaving about 1.5m (5ft) gaps between them and mulch with a layer of acidic peat, wood chippings or pine needles. Water in well, using rainwater rather than tap water if possible. Tap water contains lime which renders the soil less acidic over time. Onward Care With its expressive line drawings and charming story, Blueberries for Sal has won readers' hearts since its first publication in 1948. Perhaps Blueberries for Sal, published in 1948, is the picture book my sister, age four, and I, age two-and-a-half, are intently studying in my favorite childhood photograph. My father took the picture before he and my mother divorced. But even when I enlarge the photo, I can’t see the title of the book we are holding. But I hope it was Blueberries for Sal.
